Mary Joyce Bokern

January 9, 1930 — March 1, 2013

Mary Joyce Bokern, 83, the wife of Robert F. Bokern, died March 1 at Little Company of Mary Hospital, San Pedro, CA.

Born in St. Louis, MO., on Jan. 9, 1930, she was the daughter of Alice and Paul Newell of St. Louis. Mary Joyce, known as Joyce, graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, MO and Maryville College in St. Louis, MO.

She was an accomplished sketch artist, reader of newspapers, at least three a day, and a devotee of sewing when she was younger. She lived and traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe as the wife of her husband, who retired as a Major in the United States Air force in 1971, when the Bokerns settled in the Los Angeles area. Mr. Bokern has been in management positions in hospital administration since his retirement from the military. He is now vice president in charge of human resources at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, CA.

Joyce survived a devastating car accident in 1984 with amazing strength and grace. After being in and out of hospitals for two years, she got back on her feet to live life with her family and travel around Europe again and again. Her favorites: site-seeing, museums, musical theater and people watching in cafes and plaza's. She even managed a dance or two, a favorite of her and her husband's before the accident. Living near the beach, she loved to watch the waves hit the ocean floor, especially at sunset.

Joyce is survived by her husband and two daughters, Mary Susan Bokern of Bethesda, MD and East Greenwich, RI., and Mary Pamela Bokern, of Redondo Beach, CA; son-in-law, Theodore Holmberg, of Bethesda, MD and East Greenwich, R.I.; brother James David Newell and his wife, Carm, of St. Louis; brothers-in law, John Bokern and his wife Shirley, of St. Louis; Gene Bokern of Nokomis, FL; and Ed Bokern and his wife, Nina, of Kansas City, MO; and many nieces and nephews in the Bokern and Newell extended families. Her father-in-law, Eugene A. Bokern, died January 17, 2013.
A viewing will be held Wednesday, March 6 from 3 to 8 p.m. Services will be Thursday, March 7 at 11 a.m. Both will be at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
