On October 20, 1932 a beautiful daughter was born to Theodore Flunory and Mary Nellie Flunory in Birmingham, Alabama. Marquetta was the second child of three born to this union. Both parents preceded her in death. Marquetta was an active church goer in her youth and accepted Jesus Christ at a young age. Growing up Marquetta spent time between Miami, Florida and with her Grandmother in Alabama. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Miami, Florida. She was introduced to Oscar Grey Thompson by family members and as Marquetta would say “It was love at first sight”. Marquetta and Oscar were married on August 25, 1952 in Alabama. Together they had three children, Michael Derrick, Valencia and Oscar Grey, Jr.
Marquetta and her family moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1954 and later moved to Carson, CA in 1965. Marquetta had a 22-year career in the Data Processing Center at Security Pacific National Bank in Los Angeles where she retired as a supervisor. Even though she had a full-time job outside of her home, she made it clear that her husband and children were her first priority. Marquetta was an active member of Judson Baptist Church in Carson, CA for many years where she served as a deaconess.
Marquetta and Oscar were married for fifty-six years before the love of her life was taken away from her by the Lord Jesus Christ. After the transition of her husband, Marquetta focused all of her attention on her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marquetta later became a member of Calvary Chapel South Bay in Gardena, CA.
Marquetta’s pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met. She was caring, loving, thoughtful and nurturing. She had a natural ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. She enjoyed social activities and was an avid movie-goer. She loved shopping and had a knack for fashion. She was affectionately known as “Mom”, “Nana”, and “Quett”. She would refer to those close to her as “Baby”.
Marquetta was preceded in death by her husband Oscar Thompson Sr., her two brothers Joseph Flunory, and Theodore Flunory Jr., granddaughter Camisha Richardson and grandson Michael Thompson, Jr. She leaves to cherish her loving memory, three devoted children, number one daughter Valencia Bullock (Terry), two sons, Michael Thompson, Sr. (Jeannie) and Oscar Thompson, Jr. (Pamela).
