Marlene Baptist Dunn

June 13, 1931 — November 8, 2012

Our dear mother, Marlene Dunn, was taken to our Lord on November 8, 2012. Marlene was born on June 13, 1931 in San Francisco, California, the younger of two daughters born to Alfred and Adele Baptist. She attended high school at Academy of the Presentation and later worked as a secretarial assistant to the Dean of the College of Business at the University of San Francisco and then for Judge Nourse of the California District Court of Appeals, which is where she met her future husband Stanley L. Dunn. In 1956, Marlene and Stan relocated to southern California so that Stan could join with his father and brother in running the family printing business in Gardena. They settled in the Hollywood Riviera section of Torrance where they raised their four children, Theresa (Bateman), John Alfred (JA), Robert and Michael. Following her divorce in 1987, she lived on her own in a home near Del Amo Mall, and then in Leisure World in Seal Beach with JA who assisted her in her final years. Marlene's life was focused on her family, faith and friendships. She burst with pride at each graduation and wedding of her children and the births of her grandchildren and shared in the joy with her friends when it was their turn to mark important milestones in their own lives. She loved music and was an accomplished singer and pianist who displayed her talents in the Church choir and Sandpipers shows. An avid sports fan, she rarely missed televised games of her favorite teams, including U.S.C., Stanford, 49ers, Dodgers, Lakers and Kings. She enjoyed spending many Summer weeks at her home in Lake Arrowhead with her family and friends. Her passion and energy was an inspiration to all who knew her; and her constant optimism, even during difficult times, showed the strength of her character. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Lorraine. She is survived by her four children and seven grandchildren. A Rosary will be held at Green Hills Chapel, Rancho Palos Verdes, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20, with a memorial service to celebrate her life and contributions on Wednesday, November 21 at Noon at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro, with a reception to follow at The Cabrillo Marina Plaza. We welcome all her friends to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Marlene's honor be made to Catholic Charities to help those in need.
