Mark G. Mcilvaine

October 29, 1930 — May 9, 2016

Mark, known as Jerry or Pa to his family, was born in Hermosa Beach, California on October 29th, 1930, to Mark Kitchen McIlvaine and Hazel Vaughn Reed.
A lifetime citizen of Torrance, Jerry graduated from Torrance High School in 1949. He went on to receive his AA from El Camino, BA from UCSB and MS from USC. He was a 5 time varsity baseball collegiate letterman and was drafted by both the Red Sox & Giants. Jerry was a well decorated athlete and was inducted into the El Camino College Hall of Fame in 1993.
Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a reserve in 1948 and was called to serve active duty in 1954. He was honorably discharged in 1957 as a Lieutenant Commander and continued to serve in the reserves for the next 16 years.

In 1957 Jerry began his teaching career at the new South Torrance High School. Throughout his tenure he taught P.E. and held many positions at South, including Activities Advisor and Head Baseball Coach. Jerry retired from his beloved South High in 1991 but remained a familiar face on campus for years to come. He served several stints coaching baseball at South, with the most recent being the 2006 season. Jerry was never without his clipboard, often used simply as a prop to snap after a bad call!

He was very involved in the South Bay community and dedicated much of his time as President of the South Bay Athletic Club and running a Tuesday golf group for the past thirty years.

Jerry truly loved sports, South High School, the local community, and most importantly, his family. He was a wonderful father to his four children & the best grandfather to his 5 grandchildren, ever present at their school functions and sporting events. Those are the memories he cherished most.

Jerry was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 31 years. He is survived by his children, Kevin Dorsey (Ahn), Karen Turner (John), Melinda McIlvaine & Jill McIlvaine. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Daniel Turner (Megan), Stephen Turner, Kevin Turner, Brittney Cuomo & Bella McIlvaine-Lopez.

Jerry's memorial service will be held at the Torrance Marriott on Thursday, May 19, at 11am.
