Marjorie Lee Cunningham Caliman (also known as "Marje" and "Precious") was born on November 18, 1929 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Ann Emily Ellison and Eddie Cunningham, the eldest of five children. She graduated from Inkster High School in Michigan and Homer G. Phillips School of Nursing in St Louis, Missouri. She received a degree in Public Health in Nursing from CSULA and a teaching credential from UCLA.
She moved to California when she married Oscar Menzo Caliman, Jr on August 18, 1957. To this union four children were born: Neil Chase, Meredith Lauren, Oscar Menzo III and Janalyn Mariea.
After her children were born, Marje continued her education, obtaining a BSN and MSN in nursing. She worked as a nurse in Michigan and at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. She retired as a school nurse with the Los Angeles Unified School District, where she worked for more than 20 years.
Marje was a long-time and active member of St Timothy's Episcopal Church in Compton.
Marje was predeceased by her mother and stepfather Taylor Smith, her brother Eddie Cunningham Jr and her sisters Clara Shanklin and Mary Culp.
Marje died peacefully at home surrounded by her children at 12:02 am on Friday December 11, 2015, having given up the good fight after 86 years.
She leaves to mourn her passing her surviving sister Carrie Young of San Antonio, TX, sister-in-law Peggie Cunningham of Baltimore, MD, brothers-in-law John Young and James Culp, Sr, daughter-in-law Monica Stafford, son-in-law Daniel Sanchez, grandchildren Alisha Caliman, Elizabeth Caliman and Taylor Sanchez, and numerous nephews and nieces, especially Karolyn Young who was like another daughter to her.
