Marcelino “Marcy” was born on December 9, 1930 in Stockton, California. His parents, Marcelino and Amalia moved back to the Philippines where Marcelino grew up in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, his parents’ hometown. He obtained his early education in Sinait and continued on to the Philippine Union College in Caloocan, Rizal. In 1950 he returned to California and Joined the Navy the following year where he served aboard the USS St. Paul during the Korean Conflict. Marcy and Liling got married in 1954 and made Carson their home where they raised their three children, Leilani, Philip, and Eric. Marcy left the Navy in 1956 but continued to serve the Federal Government by working at the Naval Shipyard in Terminal Island. After several years he became an Insurance Sales Agent for Prudential until he was recruited to become a court interpreter for the Los Angeles Superior Court.
Marcelino always found time to be of service to his community. He served the City of Carson on various boards, committees, and commissions. He was instrumental in establishing the Sister City Committee, now the Carson Sister City Association, and has since affiliated Soka City, Japan as Carson’s Sister City. In 2006, he was named to the Sister Cities International 50th Anniversary’s Circle of Distinguished Volunteers citing over three decades of hands-on involvement and commitment to the association. In October 2008, Marcelino was honored as one of the “Carson Pioneers” who helped to incorporate the city of Carson in 1968. He was a member of the Kayumanggi Lions Club of which he faithfully served as a charter member. He helped form the Filipinas Chorale USA and the Cherubs and took great pride in being a part of the ensemble. He was the founder of the Sinaitanians of California, creating a strong sense of family with townmates and together help their hometown of Sinait through donations of school supplies, an ambulance, conducting medical missions, distributing Christmas packages and other projects. Marcelino was a recipient of numerous awards and was ever so grateful for the recognition bestowed upon him for the small, modest deeds he did for the community.
Marcy can often be seen with a camera around his neck wherever he goes. He found pleasure putting together many photo albums to document time spent with family, friends and his travels to Japan, Australia and Philippines. He loved an occasional deep sea fishing, golf for exercise, gardening and tending to his vegetable plants and swimming with his great grandchildren.
On August 20th, 2018, Marcy quietly passsed at his home with his loving family around him. He is survived by Liling, his wife of 64 years, his children Leilani, Phillip and Eric, his Daughter-in-Law Elizabeth and children Dyan and Niel, his grandchildren Angelina, E.J. and his great grandchildren, Kaleb and Presley. He would have been thrilled to see the newest addition to the family, Dyan and Paul’s first child, Baby Avalynne, who was born just three days before his passing.
