Our family is sad to announce the passing of our beloved father and Nonno, Luciano Car on January 12, 2023, at the age of 83. Luciano was born in Rijeka, Croatia on September 18, 1939, to parents Petar and Anna Car.
Luciano was the second youngest of seven children, Nerina, Anita, Laura, Alfredo, Boris & Gianna. After spending his childhood years in Opatija with his family, post war forced him and his family into Italian concentration camps. He immigrated to the United States to Cleveland, Ohio in the early 1960’s, then became a long-time resident of San Pedro a few years later, where he devoted his life to raising his two children as a single father. Luciano worked at Todd Shipyard early on and eventually found a career as a machinist tool & die maker in the aerospace industry until retirement. He enjoyed fishing on the Cabrillo Beach Pier, socializing at Ports of Call Village with his Croatian friends, playing bocce at Friendship Park and playing cards at a social club on 7th Street in San Pedro. He also found a passion and excitement for horse racing, making the science of studying the Racing Form (his Bible) a daily ritual. But his true pride and joy was being a devoted and loving grandfather, playing and watching over his grandchildren as they grew into young adults.
Luciano is survived by his daughter Tina DeGirolamo, son-in-law John J. DeGirolamo, son Boris Car, grandchildren Santino, Chiara and Johnny DeGirolamo Jr., his sisters Laura Medved and Gianna Medves, as well as his many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He was known for his kindness, generosity and friendship to his family and anyone he met, He will be missed dearly and we will all carry his memory in our hearts forever.
A memorial service in celebration of Luciano will be held at 2 pm on Monday, January 30, 2023, at the Historic Church at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.
