Louis W. Silver

December 20, 1924 — January 13, 2012

Louis W. Silver, MD, a long-time resident of Redondo Beach, passed away on January 13. Dr. Lou was a well loved obstetrician/gynecologist and delivered more than 4, 000 babies in the South Bay during his decades of practice here.

Lou was born on December 2, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Coney Island. He attended Lincoln High, studied pre-med at New York University, and then served in the U.S. Navy for two years. After the Navy, Lou went to the Chicago School of Medicine and then did his medical internship at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. Lou then served for two years in the air force during the Korean War, where he worked as a base physician in North Korea.

When he returned from the war, Lou moved to California to complete his residency in obestetrics and gynecology. Lou opened a medical office on Pacific Coast Highway and Avenue C in Redondo Beach in 1960. While Lou saw patients on one side of the building, his brother, Dr. Ken Silver, treated patients as a general practitioner on the other side. Lou was a well-loved and familiar face at South Bay Hospital, Torrance Memorial, Riviera Community Hospital and Little Company of Mary, where he helped his patients bring thousands of new lives into the world he so enjoyed.

Lou was always ready to see a referred patient or one of his own at any hour. Payment was never a serious concern. When one of his patients was in labor he habitually spent the entire time until delivery in the hospital. He never married, because he felt it would be unfair for him not to be able to devote himself sufficiently to his family, when he was already devoted to his profession. He was the embodiment of a dedicated and caring physician.

Lou's calm and soothing demeanor, ready smile, quick wit and great sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. Lou was a loving and loyal brother to his sister, Sally and his brother, Ken, as well his sister-in-law, Imi Silver. He was a devoted uncle to his nieces, Suzy Silver Nastaskin and Sandy Silver Spallino, his nephew Andy Silver and his great-nieces and nephews, Isabelle, Aaron and Jacob Nastaskin, and Ardrianna and Anna Spallino. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Sam and Rose Silver.
