Louis Francis Markert, Ph.D. 69
Louis F. Markert, Ph.D., 69, died Feb. 23, 2012, at his home in Los Angeles, California.The memorial service is at 2:30pm, Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Green Hills, Rancho Palos Verdes. He was born on November 19, 1942, in Newport, Rhode Island, to Julius and Genevieve. He is survived by his wife, Asako Kudo-Markert in Los Angeles, son Cory in Stockton, sisters Rita Sonoma in Florida, Eleanor Patton in Redondo Beach, and Julie Pinkston in Costa Mesa, brothers Jerry Markert in Tennessee and Tom Markert in Costa Mesa, as well as many nieces and nephews. His daughter, Devon Markert, passed away in 2008.
Lou obtained a BA in English at UCLA, an MA in Education at CSU, Dominguez Hills, and a Ph.D. in Education/Counseling at UCLA. He began his university teaching career in a college in Nebraska, where he taught for two years before moving to Berkeley and eventually to CSU, Fresno, where he taught in the graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy. He taught for 14 years there and served as Program Coordinator and Acting Department Chair. He semi-retired in 1997 and taught psychology and many other courses at University of Phoenix, National University, CSU, Bakersfield Extension, and UCLA Extension. He published many articles, including "Fatherhood." He was born to be a teacher. His students appreciated his unique and excellent teaching style. He facilitated discussion and provoked thoughts and creativity. He definitely knew how to make difficult classes enjoyable and interesting. This is what Sheila King, Program Director who, worked with Lou at UCLA Extension, described. "What a wonderful and professional person Lou was. It was such a pleasure to work with him. He inspired me in so many ways and I learned a great deal from him about healing, hope and the true meaning of happiness. We will miss him dearly and I know his colleagues and the students will miss him as well. We were all so fortunate that he touched our lives."
Lou loved walking, golf, reading, writing, nature, freedom, independency, and watching sports. He was sincere, gentle, fun-loving, resilient, sociable, witty, kind, curious, patient, sensitive, sweet, and loved by everyone he knew. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed forever.
