Our beloved mother, Lilly Gomez, 99, of San Pedro, died peacefully in her home. Daughter of Juan and Jesus Gonzales, she was born in Wilmington and was a graduate of Banning High School class of 1941. She met the love of her life, Augustine U. Gomez, sharing 64 wonderful years together until his passing in 2005. As newlyweds, they settled in San Pedro. Soon after, her husband was called to duty in WWII during which time Lilly worked at Fort MacArthur. Her husband’s career later took them to live in Ecuador, Puerto Rico, and eventually closer to home in San Diego where Lilly worked as a teacher’s assistant and court interpreter. Upon her husband’s retirement, they returned to their cherished home in San Pedro. A loving matriarch, she was often in the kitchen making delicious pies or hand-made tortillas. Her favorite times were having a house full of family and friends encouraging all to eat, laugh, and play cards. She loved reading, traveling, going to casinos, knitting, and telling family stories to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Augustine and her granddaughter Gina Tripp. She is survived by her sister Emma Guerrero, her four children Audrey Magana, Larry Gomez (wife Lynn), Randy Gomez (wife Anna), and Cindy Gomez (wife Becky), seven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
Though her passing leaves a hole in our hearts, we are so grateful for the long years we were fortunate to have had with her. We will love her always.
