Leona Joan Carrington (Thompson) passed away peacefully in the presence of family members at her home in Torrance, CA on April 4, 2022.
Leona was a lifelong Southern Californian, born on July 29, 1936 in San Pedro. She was raised in Lomita along with her sister, and graduated from Narbonne High School. In 1956, Leona married Theodore Carrington, Jr. and established a home in Torrance, CA where they raised three children.
Her adult life was rooted deeply in Christian faith. For nearly 50 years, she attended Hope Chapel (Hermosa Beach) where she was an active worshiper and involved member. Starting in the early 1980’s, Leona worked in the office at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, retiring after 20 years of service. She then went on to volunteer at the hospital for another 20 years. Her friends uniformly described her as generous, uplifting, supportive and willing to help anyone in need.
She was the beloved, proud matriarch of a family spanning four generations. Leona enjoyed trips and special occasions with friends and family, as well as traditional holiday celebrations. She traveled across the U.S. and the world. She also enjoyed family outdoor adventures.
Leona is survived by her three children, Cheryl, James and Cynthia; her grandchildren Jason Refuerzo, Jamie, Jenna, Audrey, Meredith, Ross, Jason Murray, Michael and Dominic; and her great grandchildren Madison, Talen, Avery, Max and Diego. A memorial service was held at Hope Chapel on May 28, 2022, and a private ceremony with family was held on May 31, 2022 at Green Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Torrance Memorial Medical Center (designated for Hospice program) or to Hope Chapel (designated for International Missions).
