LaVon Elaine Nielsen Blum
LaVon Blum, 84, passed away October 31, 2014, peacefully, in her sleep, following a twelve-year battle with Alzheimer's. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, December 5, 2014, 11 a.m. at Green Hills Memorial Chapel, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
LaVon was born on July 17, 1930, in Alta, IA, the daughter of Iva and Niels Nielsen. She is survived by two siblings: Violet (Louie) Meissner (WA) and Merlin (Shirley) Nielsen (VA).
After graduating high school she attended Cosmetology College and received her license. It was during this time she met her husband, Earl Blum, Jr. (deceased, 1983). Together they had three daughters: Elaine (Joseph) Flynn, Susan Rivera and Debra Wilson. She was also blessed with two granddaughters: Nicolle (Matthew) Larson and Christina Flynn, and four great- grandchildren: Brianna Flynn, Emilyn Larson, Adelyn Larson and Brixon Larson. LaVon loved being a grandmother and a great grandmother. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
LaVon and family moved from Iowa to California in 1963. For the last 40 years she resided in Carson, CA. LaVon was a beautician for over 50 years and was the proud owner of LaVon's Beauty Salon in San Pedro, CA when she retired in 2000 at the age of 70.
LaVon was known for her Sunday dinners that were open to any friend or family member happening to stop by. She loved to travel and enjoyed cruising with friends and family. She was extremely active and could often be seen walking through Veterans Park at dawn. LaVon will be remembered by all her hard work and everything she did for others.
