Kimi Carol De La Cruz

April 3, 1939 — June 17, 2014

Kimi Carol De La Cruz, 75, died peacefully on June 17, 2014, at her home in Signal Hill, California after a brief struggle with cancer. Kimi was born on April 3, 1939, in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Henry Y. Sasaki & Tatsuko Nishimori.

She grew up on her family's produce farm in Compton, California with her uncles, aunts and cousins. Kimi graduated from Compton H.S. in 1957 and went on to complete coursework at Compton Jr. College. Kimi became a licensed cosmetologist & worked at a salon in Buena Park while raising 4 children. In 1977, Kimi, with no training or experience, opened a flower shop with a friend for what was supposed to be a "fun hobby" but turned into a successful, long-standing, business. The Leather Fern Florist enriched the Garden Grove community for over 30 years.

Kimi loved fishing and traveling and Mammoth Lakes was a frequent destination with her family as was Las Vegas. Although she wasn't one to boast, she could sometimes be persuaded to tell the story of how she saw Elvis live in concert or took second in a slot tournament where she was featured in the MGM magazine. Kimi's favorite games were Blackjack and Pai Gow Poker. She wasn't afraid to take risks and also invested in the stock market and real estate.

Other travel adventures took her to destinations such as Brazil, Asia, Europe, and throughout North America. A particularly memorable trip was made to connect with her family of origin in Hiroshima, Japan accompanied by her mother, two daughters, and cousin Jill.

Kimi retired in 1997, and delighted in the chance to spend time with her seven grandchildren. Some of her hobbies included gardening, teaching her grandkids how to play piano and knit, making homemade jam and tamales with family and friends, bargain hunting, playing word whomp, keeping up with her facebook, gambling, and following the Fox News Network.

Kimi is survived by her four loving children, Donna (Lee Goldberg) De La Cruz, Michael (Elise) De La Cruz, Jeffry (Rebecca) De La Cruz, & Lynda (Michael) Longacre and seven beautiful grandchildren Sarah, Joshua, Katie, Akemi, Emma, Ryan, and Kai.

Services will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 11:00am in the Green Hills Memorial Chapel, Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
