Kazuo Sekino, 84, passed away on April 19, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Tokyo, Japan on May 15, 1932 to parents Masakazu and Haru Sekino and came to the United States in 1956. After graduating from Woodbury College with a degree in Business Administration in 1961, he worked for Bank of Tokyo (later Union Bank) in Los Angeles for over 30 years until his retirement. He dedicated close to 20 years of his Saturdays as a teacher and later principal of Venice Japanese Language School (Venice Gakuen) where he helped to promote the understanding of Japanese language, culture and traditions. An avid poetry writer of Senryu, Kazuo's works were published in both the local Japanese newspaper and publications in Japan. He was a longstanding member of and contributor to the Los Angeles Japanese Pioneer Center's Poetry Class. Kazuo was married to his wife Suzuko for 25 years before her passing in 1989 and together raised three children. He is survived by his daughter Megumi Inouye and her husband Douglas, sons Kazuyoshi Sekino and Patrick Sekino, grandchildren Michael, Madeline and Melanie and beloved dog Yukon. Kazuo will be remembered for his compassionate and tolerant nature and foremost appreciated by his children for his full dedication to the happiness of his family.
A private memorial service will take place in May. The family requests any memorial gift donations be made to the Venice Japanese Community Center ("VJCC" - 12448 Braddock Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90066) and earmarked "In memory of Kazuo Sekino for the Venice Gakuen Japanese Language School".
