Kathy Keiko Woiwod

May 10, 2013 — May 10, 2013

Kathy was the first child born to Tom and Kazuko (Kay) Sakata on June 2, 1954 at Gardena Memorial Hospital. She attended Amestoy Elementary, Peary Junior High, and graduated in 1972 from Gardena High School. Her one and only sibling Gary was born in 1957.
At the early age of 18 she married Tom Montgomery and they had a beautiful daughter named Kim. On March 4, 1974 she went to work for American Honda Motor Co. and worked for almost 35 years until January 16, 2008 when a massive stroke ended her career. During this time, doctors noticed a large tumor growing in the middle of her brain but could not do anything about it at the time.
She spent two weeks in a coma and began a slow rehabilitation process to try to regain movement on the left side of her body which was left paralyzed after the stroke. She made steady progress until the doctors decided to start radiation treatment of the tumor in December 2009.
She underwent two months of radiation treatment and the doctors were able to control the growth of the tumor. Unfortunately the radiation treatment took its toll on her and all the progress she made during rehabilitation was lost. Slowly, but surely, she regained her speech back and was able to communicate well with everyone, but was not able to move her left hand and arm anymore. On May 6 she became ill all of a sudden, and then passed away that evening at Torrance Memorial Hospital.
