Katherine Colleen Carlson

July 1, 1937 — September 11, 2022

Katherine C. “Katy” Carlson passed away on Sunday, September 11th, 2022. She was born on July 1st, 1937, in Taft, CA. She is survived by her children Jack Ewell, Diana Poe and Maureen Hornbeck. She was also the grandmother to James Grey, Matthew Hornbeck and Shannon Bezich. She was a great grandmother to Tiffany Grey, Sophia Grey and Adam Bezich.

Katy retired from Kaiser Permanente and was the president of the Retirees Association for many years. She had a heart for service and was the happiest when she was helping others both in her own community and beyond. She volunteered her time to many organizations. The impact of her work will continue to benefit future generations to come.

In the 1960’s Katy began her volunteer work with the “Head Start "program that assisted children from low-income neighborhoods with learning and development programs to provide a step up before entering Elementary school. Katy also taught a catechism class for the after-school program at Nativity Catholic School, where her children attended, and other public schools. From there she was involved in Boy Scouts with her son and then Girl Scouts with both daughters. She continued with the Girl Scout organization and was a member of the Juliette Gordon Lowe Society (the founder of Girl Scouts) for her 50+ continued years of volunteerism with the organization.

Katy was also a member of the Los Angeles Mayor’s Crisis Response team and volunteered many hours of service over the years. She received numerous awards to include “Volunteer of the Year” award from LAPD Harbor Division, The City of Los Angeles, The Mayor’s Crisis Response Team, Los Angeles Police Department and the City of Los Angeles Fire Department. She was also a member of Harbor Lites, The LA Gateway Chamber of Commerce, Harbor Gateway Neighborhood watch captain and various other organizations that she remained active in.

Katy will be greatly missed by both her family and her community.
