Karlman Wasserman MD PhD FCCP after a long illness with Parkinson’s Disease passed away on June 22, 2020 at age 93 quietly at home with his family present.
Dr. Wasserman was an internationally known physician scientist who’s
long career began after serving 2 years in the US Army and obtaining his PhD at age 24 at Tulane University. He taught and did research in the Department of Physiology at Tulane until age 27 at which time he began Medical School. While in Medical School at Tulane, he continued to teach and continued his research endeavors until he graduated at age 31. He interned on the Osler Service at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. This was followed by training at the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF. He continued research in Cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology at Stanford until he moved his laboratory to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1967. He remained active in his field until 2017 when he retired at age 90. He was a consummate and dedicated researcher who had major input into the development of basic Cardiopulmonary physiology concepts.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gail Wasserman, his “captain of the ship”, confidant, and love of his life. He leaves his children Sydlee Cohen RN, MPH, NP, (Jerry), Ronald Wasserman MD, (Midori Jane), David Wasserman PhD, (Yahua Zhang), and Wendy Agron RN, (Scott). His grandchildren include Samuel Cohen MD, Shana Cohen, Joshua Cohen, Jacob Agron JD, Miriam Del Greco M Ed, (Tommy), Naomi Wasserman PhD, (Thom), Hana Wasserman, Micah Wasserman, and Mira Wasserman.
