June Karnes

June 11, 1928 — March 10, 2022

On Thursday, March 10, 2022, June Karnes, beloved sister in Christ, passed from this earth into Heaven at the age of 93.

June was born on June 11, 1928 in Los Angeles, California to Houston and Geneva Means. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education from George Pepperdine University in 1951 and taught Home Economics in the Los Angeles City Schools for 32 years. On August 2, 1952 she married Walter Karnes. They raised two children, Karen (Karnes) Elswood and Kevin Karnes.

June had a passion for teaching, but her heart’s desire was to use her many gifts to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. She trained as a professional culinarian and used her love of cooking to prepare meals for family, friends, every church member, and for entire camp outs at Yosemite and the Colorado River. June used her talents, alongside Walter, to teach about Jesus in mission fields in the Philippines, across the United States with the Sojourners and at home by creating a clothing ministry at their church. As a girl, June earned the highest award in Girl Scouting in one of the first troops in Los Angeles. She supported her son in becoming an Eagle Scout and her daughter in the highest award in Girl Scouting. She fearlessly followed her scouting family on high adventure treks in nearly every wilderness in the United States.

June was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband of 52 years, Walter. She is survived by her sister, Ruth (Means) Cromwell of Lubbock, Texas, her daughter, Karen (Karnes) Elswood of San Antonio, Texas and her son, Kevin Karnes of Oceanside, California. Grandma June’s legacy will live on through her six grandchildren, Jonathan, Jennifer, Jamie, Josie, Jessica and Katrina, seven great-grandchildren, Ryan, Ethan, Hannah June, Benjamin, Hudson, Bennett and Titus, along with son-in-law, daughter-in-law, spouses of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends, old and new.
