A beloved lifelong San Pedro resident, Julie was born July 30, 1921 in Los Angeles to Giovanni and Isabella Durante and was the first of their 6 children. Julie was one of the golden ones in life who enjoyed every relationship and all that life gave her, until her earthly exit on March 17, 2015. She is survived by her loving family including her 2 remaining sisters: Norma Amstutz and Nellie Martin, along with 33 adoring nieces and nephews of 3 generations. Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, 10:30am at Mary Star of the Sea Church in San Pedro (where Julie sang in the choir for 30 plus years) with burial to follow in Green Hills Memorial Park. Help us celebrate her wonderful life by donating to a favorite charity, or just appreciating the beauty in every moment as Julie did.
1941 to 1945 Julia & Georgina & Family Experience of WWI:
When WWII started and all the eligible men were being drafted the women took over most of the jobs the men had to leave. America came to life like never before or after.
The term "Rosie the Riveter" was used to embody those women who joined the ranks of all the aircraft workers, shipyards workers and many machine shops workers that were in full force. They were turning out airplanes, ships, tanks, trucks, jeeps, and so many other things needed for the war effort.
Julie was 20 and took the training for lathe and drill operator. She went to work in a shop in watts and had to ride the Pacific Electric, which was a called, "the red car or trolley"… It was a long way from home and there were incidences with the "zoot suitors" and the "pachucos" who were gangs that fought with each other and the sailors. When the P. E. went through watts and stopped to pick up passengers, they would throw rocks and bottles at the trolley. Thank God they didn't have guns in those days. Well Julia worked there for a while and luckily found a job at the Harbor Boat Yard on Terminal Island across the bay. We all were very happy that she didn't have to go so far from home. They had Julie launch a P. T. Boat and gave her a big bouquet of Roses.
At that time Georgina had graduated from high school and got a clerk job at Mac Arthur. She worked there for about 3 years then decided to join the "WACS." The Woman's Army Corps.
