"I love you more," was the expression Judy told her daughter Beth after hearing Beth say, "I love you, mom." She would then giggle...Judy Lee Mossman (Fierman) passed peacefully on July 31, 2023 at age 82 after a life well lived.
Judy was born in Long Beach, California on February 19, 1941. She was raised in San Pedro by her mom Marilynn and Al Fierman. She graduated from San Pedro High and then left to attend the University of Hawaii with her cousin to learn hula. Upon returning, Judy took at job at C & C Electronics where she met and married Marvin Mossman. They settled back in San Pedro, California and purchased Fierman's Sporting Goods. During those years, they welcomed the birth of their daughter, Beth and bought a home in Rancho Palos Verdes.
After the 1984 Olympics, Marvin and Judy sold their business and Judy went back to study medical transcription. After a few years, she went to work for Harbor UCLA in the Department of Pathology and was soon promoted. After working for them, Judy was recruited to UCLA to run the financial side of the Department of Pathology, School of Medicine. She happily retired from there in 2013. Judy was the financial rock that kept the Chair of the Department in shape for many years.
Judy was always passionate about Cabrillo Beach and soon signed up to volunteer. At the Cabrillo Aquarium, Judy learned how to run the touch tank, give tours and work with all of the Elementary Schools that came to visit. Determined to also support the whale watching tours, Judy took classes and passed the whale naturalist test yearly. She also became a friend of the aquarium and for years helped financially support their endeavors. You could see her actively participating in their annual Gala and at the gift shop. After 10 years, Judy was named volunteer of the year. When Judy was not able to walk as a docent, she transitioned into being a volunteer at the information booth. She became a permanent fixture every Friday welcoming visitors, giving them maps and her favorite part, giving out stickers to kids.
In 2017, Beth and her husband Ivan Marroquin made the decision to sell their home and move in with Judy to help her navigate her later years. During these years, Beth, Ivan and Judy traveled to Hawaii, Washington, Arizona, New York, Mexico, Idaho and locally. Judy was an annual Disneyland passholder and could often be seen using her scooter to enjoy the park. When not traveling, Judy was at home with her beloved dog, Kona. These two spent hours enjoying the sun and taking rides to the beach.
In 2023, Judy lost her battle with pulmonary fibrosis after exceeding the diagnosis by 10 years. Judy was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Marvin Mossman, her brother as well as elders and friends. She is survived by her only daughter, Beth and her son-in-law, Ivan; sister Robyn and husband Terry; nephew Morgan and his wife Pamela along with their two kids, Morgan Jr and Riley; niece Stacey and her husband Neal, and her many friends at the Cabrillo Aquarium.
The Mossman-Marroqu?n family would like to thank Torrance Memorial Hospice Care for ensuring she was able to comfortably rest until her passing. Judy will be returning home to watch over Beth, Ivan and Kona. Donations can be made in Judy's memory to the Cabrillo Aquarium.
