Marcy's voice fell silent this week as her compassionate and gracious puppeteer, Joyce ElaIne McCarroll-Barker-Linsday (83) of Torrance, went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2016. Mom, Gramma, Granny, or Gi-Gi-Ma, to some - is survived by her husband David, daughters, Nancy and Tina, 8 grandchildren, and 16 1/2 great grandchildren.
Joyce was born April 15, 1933 to Joseph P. and Lilly L. McCarroll (Tufts) in Walla Walla, Washington and was one of 4 children. Her two brothers, Orville and David, and her sister, Delores, all preceded her in death. Raised in Walla Walla, Joyce developed a love and passion for singing, being a member of the church community, and dedicated herself to spreading God's word by teaching children about the bible.
In July 1950, Joyce married Louis Barker Jr. and shortly thereafter moved from Walla Walla to Redondo Beach where they raised 2 girls, Sharon Marie and Nancy Louise. Joyce was blessed with an entrancing singing voice and in 1969, as part of the Sweet Adelines Barber Shop Quartets, she took second place in an international competition held at the Hilton in downtown Los Angeles.
In 1971, Louie and Joyce moved to Torrance with their children and set up a small farm. Where they often took care of their three grandchildren, Eric, Maurice and Lavonne. Summers were joyfully spent camping and fishing all over California, which required Joyce's other extraordinary talent - untangling fishing line – something the grandchildren needed often! Louie and Joyce were the happiest when they were on a boat or a campsite with their children and grandchildren.
Shortly after moving to Torrance, Marcy was created. Ventriloquism had been a challenge for Joyce to learn, but once she found Marcy's voice she entertained and taught countless children about the blessing of Jesus and the word of God. Joyce took Marcy to churches and summer camps located all over the country.
In 1987, Louie was suddenly taken home to the lord and Joyce drew strength from her church community where she continued to play the piano during service, sing in the Choir, and, most importantly, teach Children's Church, help run the Church youth organization, AWANA, where she met David T. Linsday.
In 1989, David T. and Joyce E. were married on April 15th, her birthday. David brought a daughter, Tina, into the family and over the years would be blessed with 5 more grandchildren, David, Gary, Karen, Janee, and C.J.
David also brought Clyde, a puppet companion for Marcy. Together Marcy and Clyde would continue to teach children about Jesus, share the word of God at convalescent facilities, minister to the homeless, and bring joy and happiness to young and old alike.
Joyce and Marcy, were kind, truly selfless, compassionate, devout, and giving. We derive comfort knowing that she is with the Lord today, but we will surely miss the joy she brought to our lives.
