Joseph Anthony Virga age 82, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Thursday September 18, 2014.
Born March 21, 1932 in Passaic, New Jersey to Anthony Virga and Mary Valenza (Italian Immigrants from Isnello Sicily). He lived in San Pedro, California and worked as printer for 25 years at "The Daily Breeze" newspaper until he retired. Joe served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 with the 1199th SU Flight Det out of Fort Jay, New York. He volunteered much of his time playing the piano at nursing homes and hospitals in the Los Angeles area. Joe, also known as "Chick" was an avid racquetball player and loved to bowl. He was very devoted to his faith and attended church services daily. He lived life simply and enjoyed making others happy. He had an infectious smile and loved to make people laugh. He especially loved his children, grandchildren and extended family.
Survivors include his 4 children and their families: Mary and Randy Pegram of Kernersville, NC and their children Zachary and Katarina; Tony and Karen Virga of Kernersville, NC and their children Christopher, Hannah, and Emily; JoAnne and John Augustine of Lewisville, NC; Elizabeth and Mike Nannery of Winston-Salem, NC and their children Sean Henderson, Keelyn Henderson, and Ian Henderson;. Joseph is also survived by his nieces and nephews Martin, Robert, Anthony, Antoinette, Carol, Jimmy, Nancy, Margaret, and Michael. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and 3 older brothers: Salvatore Verga and James Verga of Clifton, New Jersey; and Anthony Virga of Palm Desert, California.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, Sept. 26 at 10:00 am at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 1940 S. Prospect Ave. Redondo Beach, CA 90277 with a reception immediately following the service. Burial will be 2:00 pm at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 South Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, California 90275.
