Joseph P. Van Der Meulen, M.D.

Joseph P. Van Der Meulen, M.D., 86, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at his home in Rolling Hills Estates, California surrounded by his family, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Dr. Van Der Meulen was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts to Sarah and Edward Van Der Meulen. He graduated from Boston Latin School (the oldest public school in the United States, established 1635) in 1946. He received his A.B. in Mathematics, magna cum laude, from Boston College in 1946, and his M.D., cum laude, from Boston University School of Medicine in 1954. He completed his internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City in 1955 and from 1955 to 1958, was on active duty as a lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy. He completed his residency training in Neurology at Boston City Hospital in 1959 and fellowship training in Neurophysiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm under Nobel laureate Prof. Ragnar Granit in 1962. He later served as an Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard University and Associate Professor of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
Dr. Van Der Meulen was recruited to the University of Southern California in 1971 to serve as Chair of the Department of Neurology and Chief Neurologist at LAC USC Medical Center. Throughout his long career, Joe wore many hats at USC. Most significantly, from 1977 until his retirement in 2008, he served as USC Vice President for Health Affairs. He also served as Chairman of the Board of USC University Hospital (now Keck Hospital of USC) and Dean of the Keck School of Medicine from1985 to 1986 and 1995 to 1999. Despite his many roles in academic leadership, Joe maintained his reputation as a master clinician.
Joe has been described, by friends, students and colleagues as a man of integrity and respect for all persons, possessing astute skills as a clinician. His vision and grace as a senior statesman at USC inspired all who crossed his path. In his free time, he enjoyed travel, golf, skiing, studying languages and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann, and his three daughters - Lisa (Jeff) Johnson, Suzanne (Chris) Stouder, Janet (Bryan) Raydon, and his eleven grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
