It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Joseph John Tomich Sr.
He passed away December 31, 2013 at the age of 89, one month shy of his 90th birthday. Born February 10, 1924 to Valle and Phyllis Tomich in Madrid, Iowa where he grew up in a humble coal mining family. In 1943, he entered the U.S. 8th Air Force, 2nd Air Division with the 458 Bomb Group where he was stationed in Norwich, England during World War II. While serving his country, he flew 30 combat missions over occupied Germany in a B24 Liberator as a waist gunner. Awarded the "Distinguishing Fly Cross," five air medals and three bronze stars for his accomplishments.
Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force in September of 1944, he worked as a construction apprentice while attending U.S.C. He migrated to San Pedro where he met the love of his life Marian Katnic and wed on January 10, 1953 at Holy Trinity Parish in San Pedro. He was 10 days away from celebrating his 61st Wedding Anniversary.
Joe resided in the San Pedro area where he worked in the construction business for 25 years in the trades and 15 years as a builder. After retiring, he spent his leisure time golfing, oil painting and traveling.
He is survived by his wife Marian, son Joe Jr. (Anna Marie), daughter Valerie, grandsons Vincent and Nicholas along with several nephews and nieces.
He was a devoted family man and he always remained optimistic and positive, regardless of the consequence. He was a generous and loving father that will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, 1:00pm at Green Hills Memorial Chapel, Rancho Palos Verdes. Burial to follow in the Bell Tower.
