d. May 31, 2020

On Sunday, May 31, 2020, at the age of 89, Joseph “Joe” “Sensei Joe” Kajita, passed away. Born in Japan in 1931, Joe began studying the modern martial art of judo at the age of 7. By age 20, he won his first of many championships. Joe emigrated to America when he was 25 years old, and in 1956 was drafted into the U.S. Armed Forces (Army). In 1987, Joe and his family moved to California and in 1998, he opened his own judo center, El Toro Judo Club. Joe held the prestigious rank of 9th Dan (red belt) – a rank attained by very few in the world. Over his lifetime, he practiced, competed with, and coached many renowned judo players. At the age of 74, Joe became a World Masters Champion.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Hinako, and predeceased by his daughter, Donna (age 56). Joe has many loving family members.

Joe was a kind hearted, genuine man, and he always had a smile on his face. Please respect the family regarding a service that is private. In lieu of flowers, please make your donations to the non-profit judo center, El Toro Judo Club, or a charity of your choice in honor of Joe.
