Jose Figueiredo dos Reis, brother and father, left to meet his family in heaven on the morning of September 13, 2016.
Jose was born in the small town of Mosteiros on the Azores island of Sao Miguel, Portugal on April 27, 1922. He served in the local Portuguese Army and Guarda Fiscal (Customs Office) for several years before deciding to journey to the USA. He came to the US in the early 50's, where he lived a simple though dramatic life. Jose loved music and played the tenor saxophone in several bands after 30 years as a machine operator at Boise Cascade in Torrance, CA. Some of the bands included the symphony orchestra at El Camino, Harbor College, and Palos Verdes, as well as the Portuguese marching bands of Artesia and San Diego. He also loved taking cruises and traveling, where he met many friends who fell in love with his talkative and witty personality.
Jose passed away surrounded by photos of his family including his parents who have passed on, Jose Pereira Figueiredo, Mariana Reis, and his surviving sons and daughters, Randall Reis of Elk Grove, CA, Bart Reis of Oakland, CA, Lea Reis of Torrance, CA, and Andrea Reis of West Hills, CA, and his surviving grandchildren, Sarah Walker, Seth Reis, Matthew Reis, Michelle Reis, Geordan Johnson, Naomi Johnson, Neah Johnson, Kiani Reis, Cheyanne Morgan, Kennedy Morgan, and Christian Morgan. He is also survived by his younger brothers Honorato and Horatio Figueiredo.
His last request as he went to bed the evening before he left us, was to go to Portugal. Our hope is that he is happily joking and laughing with his parents and siblings who he joined, providing them with the joy he gave us during his time on earth. Jose will be truly missed.
