Jon Collins died peacefully at his home on August 10, 2012 after a nine-month battle with brain cancer. Born in Flint Michigan in 1935 to David and Mary Collins, Jon was a highly respected aerospace engineer who spent his career making space exploration safe for both the explorers and the people on earth. He was a devoted and loving husband and father, and leaves behind his beloved wife Nancy, children Mark, Steve, Paul and Laura; daughters-in-law Aiko Shimada, Noel Collins, and Kathleen Robins; and grandchildren Ariel, Sophia and Aidan Collins, Kate and Collin Robins, and Rumi Shimada. Jon is also survived by his brother James Collins and sister-in-law Dorothy Collins of Marquette, Michigan and his sister-in-law Mary Tarter of Eugene, Oregon.
Jon attended college at the University of Michigan, completed a Master's degree at the University of Colorado, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of California Los Angeles. He served on the boards of directors for two Boy Scout troops and ChildShare, Inc., as part of his commitment to giving back and improving the lives of children. He was a life-long educator and mentor, a classical music aficionado, an avid sculptor, a world traveler, a voracious reader and a truly kind and caring man.
Jon will be interred at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. in a private burial. A closed-casket visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm on August 18th at in the Villetta Room at Green Hills Mortuary, 27501 South Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
A Memorial Service celebrating Jon's life will be held at St. Peter's-by-the-Sea at 6410 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, 90275 on Saturday, August 25, at 2pm.
