John V. Urbano, (82), of Harbor City, California, passed away on December 31, 2023, at Torrance Memorial Medical Center with his wife and children at his side. John was the eldest son, born to John Sr. and Rosaline on December 17, 1941, in Honolulu, Hawaii. John was a talented athlete who loved playing all sports including football at Banning High School. He was also a talented musician who played the bass guitar for his band the Deltas and loved to sing. John enlisted in the Army after high school and was stationed in Morneau, Germany where he met his wife of almost 56 years, Carmen. After completing his service, John returned to Barcelona, Spain to marry Carmen. They returned to the US and started their family in Wilmington, California.
John is survived by his wife Carmen, four children, Mark, Michael, Maricarmen (Luhrsen), and Mario, and ten grandchildren, James, Natalie, Olivia, Alexander, AJ, Bryce, Dominic, Sofia, Ashley, and Milena. He is also survived by his brother Fred Urbano and sister Gwen Urbano. John was predeceased by his parents, John and Rosaline as well as his sister Judith and brother Charlie.
John's professional career included spending more than 35 years as an international customs broker managing the logistics of imports and exports through LAX and the Port of Long Beach. John then spent the next 25 years working at Costco in Torrance. He traded in his suits and ties for wearing Hawaiian shirts and khakis daily. John truly found joy in his work at Costco at the Print and Copy Center, Hearing Aid Center, Pharmacy, and Door Greeter where he made many new friends as well as enjoyed seeing the familiar faces of family and friends daily.
John's greatest joy was spending time with family. He loved quiet nights at home with Carmen watching the Dodgers, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune. He also enjoyed planning family barbeques where he and Carmen could test their newest marinade recipe find. John looked forward to many summers spent in Hawaii on vacation as well as extended trips to Barcelona to visit Carmen's family over the years. He enjoyed going out to dinner with Carmen and never found a steak he didn't enjoy.
John was the best husband, father, and grandfather, always supportive, loving, and encouraging. John positively impacted every person he encountered, and he will truly be missed by all of us.
