John Everett Taber passed away peacefully in his Rolling Hills Estates home on November 13, 2022, at the age of 97. He was born on May 3, 1925, in Burbank, California, to Sherwood Holmes Taber and Hazel Ruth (York) Taber.
John earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Caltech in 1946 in a special accelerated naval officer training program and later went on to earn his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley.
From an early age, John was interested in anything mechanical or technical. He loved building things and creating inventions of his own. His childhood interests followed him into adulthood and served him well in his successful career working primarily on satellite communication systems in the aerospace industry.
John worked at Hughes Aircraft from 1946-1954 where he developed, among many things, an intercom system for the notable Hughes H-4 Hercules Flying Boat, nicknamed the “Spruce Goose.” In 1954, he was
hired by TRW (now Northrup Grumman) and spent the next 37 years in various project management positions. Of note, his concept for Landsat Image Processing earned him the NASA Medal for Scientific Achievement in 1974.
John met his beloved wife Lynn in 2002 on a Sierra Club trip he was leading in New Zealand. John and Lynn had similar passions and together they were active participants in the Sierra Club and Omnilore (learning in retirement) pursuing their love of travel, hiking, and learning. They also supported the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, which designated a pocket park in the City of Rolling Hills Estates as the “John and Lynn Taber Grove” in recognition of their contributions.
John is survived by his loving wife Lynn (Edwards) Taber, his sister Louise (Taber) Mixon, his six children James Sherwood Taber (Joy), Roger John Taber (Alice), Barbara Louise (Taber) Peterson, Janet Taber Hurley (David), Richard John Martin (Dawn) and Alexander Galanos Taber (Karen); eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. John also leaves behind his blended family with Lynn: six children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his parents, three sisters, and one brother.
A private burial service will be held at Green Hills Mortuary in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service and reception at the Taber residence, on November 19, 2022, at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy (pvplc.org).
