John Holly Small

We lost our beloved brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend John Small at the age of 88 on July 13, 2014. After a brief illness, John passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was born March 9, 1926 in East St. Louis, Illinois. John was a long time resident of San Pedro. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Louise Small, his brother Edward Small and his great granddaughter Ayla Estelle Ardaiz. He is survived by his children, James Small, Linda (Mike) Mauck, Anne Munoz, brothers, Dr. Robert (Glenda) Small, David (Jo Ann) Small, grandchildren, Jesse (Amy) Mauck, Holly Ann Mauck, Heather Mauck, Mark (Cecelia) Ardiaz, Matthew (Selena) Ardiaz, Michael Leon, Monica Leon, great grandchildren, Rylie Ardiaz, and Daniella Ardiaz. After serving his country in the Marines in WW II, he earned his masters degree at UCLA. He worked as an administrator for Los Angeles Unified School for 38 years. Many of those years were spent as Principal of San Pedro High School. Rain or shine John was found enjoying his son Jim's Friday night football games. John was also long time member of The San Pedro Elks, and enjoyed spending time with friends there. He enjoyed going to the gym, hanging out at Whole Foods and walking and hiking Paseo Del Mar. He was generous, thoughtful and loving. His pride and joy was his two homes he helped design and build in Rancho Palos Verdes and in San Pedro. He will be truly missed by friends and family. Services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Green Hills Memorial Chapel.
