John Anthony Maleta beloved father, friend, teacher passed away August 9th 2021 at Little Company of Mary San Pedro CA.
He is survived by his sister Ann Maleta, brother George Maleta, son Anthony, daughter Stacy Maleta, grandchildren Brandon, Wyatt, Anthony Jr. and daughter in law Christine Maleta.
John Anthony Maleta was born Oct. 9 1936 to George and Tonka Maleta at San Pedro Hospital. He graduated from San Pedro High school in 1955 and attended Harbor College where he graduated with degrees in Industrial Technology and Fire Science.
He served in the US Air Force as a crash rescue fire fighter from 1960 to 1966. In 1961 he was hired by the Palos Verdes Estates Fire Dept. John Maleta became a Los Angeles County firefighter in 1962.
John married Lynda Cason in June of 1966 at Mary Star of the Sea.
April of 1970 he was promoted to Fire Captain where he worked at LA Co. station 127, home of the TV show “Emergency” where he participated as an advisor and extra.
John is best known in the Fire Service for his leadership and as a founding member of the LA Co.FD Hazardous Materials program. He taught hundreds of students around the country and established the first Haz Mat training facilities at Del Valle CA where he was honored by at street being named after him.
He retired in Sept. 1996 and lived in San Pedro CA until his passing.
