John A. Barnhill

John A Barnhill resided in Rancho Palos Verdes Peninsula, Since Fall of 1972 (41yrs). Prior to Palos Verdes, John's life experience took him from Sturgis, Kentucky where he was born to Evansville, Indiana, where he grew up through his High School years, then to Nashville, Tennessee, for University, and his professional basket ball career took he and his family to Cleveland Ohio, followed by St. Luis, Missouri; New Jersey; Indianapolis, Indiana; Denver, Colorado; Indianapolis, Indiana.

Work Experience - For nineteen years, John lived in the world of professional basketball. He played on several teams in the NBA which included the St. Louis Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Baltimore Bullets and Denver Rockets until his retirement as player/coach with the Indiana Pacers in 1972. Then he was petitioned to assistant coach the Los Angeles Lakers. He retired from the Lakers in 1977. John became an entrepreneur in 1973 and opened a sporting good store called Barnhill's Sports Barn (family run business) which gave him an outlet to follow his passion for tennis and tennis instruction into the early 1980's. John completed a Masters in Science for Special Education at California State University Northridge and joined the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1976 and retired in 2001 as a special education teacher at Bret Hart Middle School.

John Served briefly for the US Army Reserves.

Education: Tennessee State University, Nashville, Tenessee (Bachelor Science - Physical Education); California State University, Northridge, California (Master Science - Special Education).

John suffered from a rare version of Muscular Dystrophy (Mitochondrial Myoapathy) which, as of November 2013, there is no known treatment to stop, nor reverse the progression of the disease. John was a very active member and later an Elder of the Seventh-day Adventists church in Rolling Hills, California.

Professional honors:

12 year professional Basket Ball career - As of 2013 the average length of a professional basket ball player is 6.070 years. In the early days it fluctuated around 4yrs. John Barnhill retired as a player in 1972, so statistically his length is about 3 times the average for players of his time.

An excellent and trophy winning league bowler.
