Janice Darlene Whisler
November 19, 1959 - June 16, 2020
Resident of Redondo Beach

Beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, and aunt, Janice passed away peacefully with her family by her side after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Janice was born and raised in Redondo Beach and attended special programs for individuals with Down syndrome at several South Bay schools. She also attended, in turn, Southwest Industries Workshop, Canyon Verde Day Program, and Cole Vocational Program.

She was raised and cared for by her loving parents, Harold (Hal) and Darlene Whisler until Hal’s passing in 2004, and then solely by Darlene until 2014. Janice then lived happily in two group homes, Anchor Home and then Heartwell Home in Carson, CA until early 2018 when her care requirements changed. She returned to her family home where she was cared for by her mother, assisted by her siblings and their spouses, Michael (Constance), Steven (Barbara), Daniel (Janet), and Linda Martinez (Donald), all of whom survive her.

Janice was a bright light to her family and all those who knew her. Very full of sass but also full of empathy, love, and tenderness. She had a twinkly-eyed smile and an infectious, hearty laugh which life could never stifle. She loved to sing and dance “like no one was watching.” She, as can be said of most individuals with Down syndrome, made all those around her more patient, compassionate, and caring.

A small service is planned for Janice later this month at Green Hills Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest near her devoted father.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harbor Help Fund--
( http://www.harborrc.org/get-involved/support )
or Optimal Hospice Foundation –
( http://www.optimalhospicefoundation.com/donate/ ) in her memory.
