Janet B. Mangold

d. January 29, 2012

Janet B. Mangold passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2012. She is survived by her beloved husband, Eldon Mangold, children Robert Deehan, Ellen Deehan, Carol Traeger, Christine Flournoy, and Deborah Wagnon; and grandchildren Natalie Deehan-Clark and Page Traeger. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Jac and Althea Bulk, and her brother, David Bulk.
Janet was born in Brightwaters Long Island New York, and was a longtime resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. She grew up in Babylon, N.Y., where her parents owned and operated Bulk's Nursery, whose authentic Dutch windmill was a town landmark. As a youngster, Janet became an avid sailor, competing in regattas at the Babylon Yacht Club.
After graduating from high school at Mary A. Burnham School for Girls in Massachusetts, Janet earned her nursing degree from St. John's Episcopal School of Nursing in Brooklyn, N.Y. She subsequently moved to Northern California, where she worked for several years as a registered nurse at Stanford Medical Center before managing an affiliated medical facility.
In 1972, she married Eldon Mangold, an aerospace engineer with TRW, and moved to the Palos Verdes Peninsula (now Rancho Palos Verdes), where she became an active golfer and member of the Rolling Hills Country Club Women's Club. In the mid-1970s, Janet returned to school and earned a BA in Business Administration from Pacific Christian University.
An active and long-term member of the Las Maraquitas chapter of the San Pedro Assistance League, Janet also served as a docent for the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, and spent several years as a Hospice volunteer.
Janet was a talented and dedicated painter (oil and water color). Her paintings reflect a love of sailing and nature. She also loved to read, dance, coddle babies, and "connect" with people. And she never met an animal she didn't like.
Perhaps her most marked character traits were a generosity of spirit and a great sense of humor.
And above all else, she was always a lady.
