Irene G. Hanscom

On October 27, 2011 Irene G. Hanscom, 90 years old, passed away from pneumonia.
She leaves behind her husband of 52 years, Stanley Hanscom; daughter, Carol Elliott (Terry); son, John Schwab (Nancy); grandsons, Todd, Mark, Craig Elliott, Dennis Velez II; granddaughters, Elizabeth Huy (Elliott), Kelli Schwab, Nicole Velez; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Irene was born in Nebraska in 1921, moved to Southern California in 1946 and was a 58-year San Pedro resident. She retired from Pacific Telephone in San Pedro after 25 years of service and subsequently became the librarian at Crestwood Elementary School, retiring from there in 2003 after 7 years of service. In the last 22 years she acquired the nickname "Oba" by those relatives and extended family living in the San Pedro area ... this adoring nickname was because she was so loving and supportive of her extended San Pedro family as well as the relatives that had moved to the northwest and southeast. All of us she left behind will forever cherish her memory and strive to live our lives up to the standard she set. We love you Oba and always will.
Graveside services will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m.
