Iona M. Mccalester

April 21, 1926 — January 11, 2014

Iona Myrtle Horst McCalester was born in 1926 to Sam and Myrtle Horst. She is preceded in death by her mother, father, step mother (Alice Horst), step brother (William Horst), and husband (Henery McCalester). She is survived by children Jimmie McCalester, Roy McCalester, Sharon McCalester; grandchildren Catherine Davis, Gregory McCalester, Sara McCalester, Amanda McCalester, Lukas Lapinski, Nicholas Lapinski; great grand children Bianca McCalester, Kennedy McCalester, Eavan McCalester, Carrington McCalester, Riley Davis, Rowan Davis; sisters Imogene Barnes, Iola Nichols, Ina Mae Grubb; brothers Henry Horst, Oren Horst, Cairl Gene Horst.

Iona was the mother of 3 children and the "mother"/sister/brother to 7 siblings. Growing up as the oldest child in Butler, OK, she took on the responsibility of caring for children at an early age. Throughout her life, she carried strong sense of family, trying to keep in touch with all and reminding others to do the same!

She was very bright and intelligent with a remarkable memory! She graduated valedictorian of her high school class; dreamed of herself going to college and inspired others to challenge themselves to "do what they wanted to do and could if they put their mind to it". Her wit and feisty attitude enabled her to spar with anyone she thought was "crossing the line".

She was independent, strong, and exuded self confidence. She met the challenges of life and never complained. She loved to share her experiences with anyone who would listen, talking about growing up on the farm in Butler, taking care of her brothers and sisters, how she met and married Henery Cairl McCalester and the early years of marriage, her jobs as telephone operator, sales clerk, and inventory control, and even the soap operas. Her impeccable memory allowed her to provide all the details, crisp and clear. She also loved to go to Hawaii, watch TV, cook and sew. But most of all, she loved to talk to the family!

We will all dearly miss her phone calls, but know she is in our hearts forever, is watching over us and will let us know if we stray! We love you!

The memorial service will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park, Eternal Gardens, on January 16, 2014 at 10AM.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to SMILETRAIN, a favorite charity of Iona's.
