Horng-Lian Deng

September 8, 1929 — October 26, 2012

Our mother, Mrs. Horng-Lian Deng was born in Jian-Ping, Laio-Ning Province, China on September 8th, 1929. She had two brothers. Her father studied in Japan and was also a successful banker and businessman. Her parents doted on her as the only daughter of the family.

In 1947 she graduated with high honors from Re-He Girls' high school with the intention of attending college to further her education. However, the war between the communists and the KMT broke out, which changed her life forever. She married Mr. Xian-Gui Deng, our father, in 1948. He was a KMT military officer at the time. As they escaped from China, she lost her entire dowry en route to Taiwan. At the age of 20, she gave birth to her first child and daughter, Wei-Jia (Cheryl). Three sons, Wei-Ping (Victor), Wei-Chuan (Peter), and Wei-I (Paul) followed after. Father was away from home on duties often. Being alone, with little income and no relatives around to help, she received Christ and became a Christian. Gaining strength from the Lord, she endured and raised all four of her children.

In 1955, she became a qualified elementary school teacher. This helped the family's financial condition. She began to teach at Nei-Li, followed by Zhong-Zheng elementary schools in Tao-Yuan County, Taiwan. She was a diligent and responsible teacher who often won medals for being an "Excellent Teacher." Ten years later, father started to work for National Taiwan University in Taipei. Being away from home, mother shouldered the full responsibilities of raising the children while working as a teacher. After 23 years of teaching, she resigned from her position due to poor health.

Mother was a straight-forward woman with a strong will. To reach her goals, she was a true "Tiger Mom." She was very strict with her children. She taught her children the value of enduring hardship and to know Christ, our Savior. With her teachings & encouragement the three of us came to the US and gained Master degrees. The fourth and youngest, Paul, also graduated from the dental school.

In 1986, father suddenly fell ill and passed away. Her life thus changed again. Before he passed she had visited and lived with Victor in Princeton, Illinois for a short time in 1979. She visited Victor a second time in 1985 and lived in Torrance, California. Gaining independence, at age of 68, she got her driving license for the first time. She bought and owned her own home in Torrance in 1997. She was independent and self sufficient even in her old age.

She loved playing the piano and singing songs. She also enjoyed eating dumplings and noodles. For her whole life she loved her children with all her heart. Her last teaching to her children was "To Love God and one another."

Mother passed away in Torrance Memorial Hospital on Oct. 26, 2012. She was 83 years old. With her four children around her holding her hands, she passed away in peace. She is survived by her 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
