Hilda was born April 5, 1927 in Quibell, Ontario Canada to Mary & Jacob Szeibert. The Szeibert family eventually moved to Montreal, Quebec, where Hilda, although German attended French school. Hilda would soon learn and speak fluently in three languages (English, French & German). She attended St. Patrick's Academy, an all-girls school and then worked administrative jobs, as well as, modeled. Her parents, like many at the time, had a summer home at Pointe Calumet Lake, just outside of Montreal. Her father built a custom home on the lake that was the envy of locals and vacationers and that home still stands to this day. One weekend, she would meet the love of her life Andre Martin. Their first date would be at the "San Souci" (Without Worries) dance hall on Pointe Calumet, which lead to a 7-year courtship. On April 29, 1950, Hilda and Andre started their life together and remained devoted to each other for 65 years. In 1952, she and Andre joined other family members in their move to Torrance, California where they raised their children. During her amazing life, Hilda was not only the epitome of a homemaker and a mother, but also found happiness working at: Shell Oil, the Employment Development Department of California and being the brains behind Andy's Liquor Store (named after Andre). Hilda's children would describe her as: loving, dedicated, strong, fierce, adventurous, protective, stylish and beautiful. She was always "dressed to the nines" and loved hats, boots and accessories. Hilda was spoiled by Andre and every Christmas, he would fill a 4' tall, red Christmas stocking with beautiful clothing, jewelry, chocolates and a bottle of B & B. Together, they lived an extraordinary life; traveling to Europe, cruising and making new friends. However, in 2010, Hilda was diagnosed with Alzheimers/dementia and slowly began to be robbed of her precious memories, ability to communicate and finally, was no longer able to recognize her family and friends. She lived out the remainder of her life in assisted living, but in 2014, Andre moved in with her and they lived their last year together until his passing in May 2015. Hilda was also preceded in death by her parents (Mary & Jacob) and her siblings (Mary, Joseph & Jack). She is survived by her three children: Danielle, Randy (Victoria) and Stephanie (Mike), as well as, their seven grandchildren: Tara (Erik), Matt (Joanna), Allie, Michaela, Christian, Ryan and James. Visitation will be (12-1pm) followed by Rosary and Mass held at Nativity Catholic Church in Torrance on Friday, June 10, 2016. In lieu of flowers, please donate in the name of Hilda Martin, to:
