Helen Ann (Trani) McClung passed away peacefully at home on August 27 at age 89. A life-long resident of San Pedro, Helen was born on September 1, 1923 to Caterina and Francesco Trani. Helen was preceded in death by her two sisters and four brothers; Phyllis (DiMeglio), Louise (Rose), Nick, Lou, Tony, and Jimmy Trani. As the last surviving child of her generation, she enjoyed retelling the 'Trani stories' to her family, passing on their rich history and Italian heritage she so loved.
She married the love of her life Porter McClung in 1945, and together they celebrated 27 beautiful years as sweethearts. They raised four children: Tim McClung (wife Kathy, deceased), Bill McClung (deceased), Mari Loveridge (husband Paul) and Pattie Rosenthal (husband Ed). 'Grammy' was blessed with eight grandchildren: Patricia, Daniel, Steven, and Nick McClung, Lauren (Loveridge) Rackemann and Erin Loveridge, Josh Rosenthal and Amanda (Rosenthal) Hughes. Helen was also proud to have eight great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
Helen truly enjoyed her life as a homemaker. She had an extended family in her close Goodhope Avenue neighbors, teaching and delighting in all the children. She filled her home with music, singing as she baked, sewed, gardened and rocked her precious babies. She was known for her loving spirit, joy, and strong faith. She often volunteered with the Boys' Scouts and Girls' Scouts, and at Seventh Street Elementary School, the original Boys' Club of San Pedro, and Holy Trinity Parish.
Helen answered her call to community service, working at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital as a dedicated messenger until she retired as supervisor at age 74. Many people referred to her as "Helen with the beautiful smile". In retirement, she continued her daily walks sharing her love and her philosophy, Stay close to God and look for the blessings.
Her funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at Green Hills Memorial Chapel and Cemetery. Reception following at 1:00 PM at Top of the Market Restaurant, 1190 Nagoya Way at Ports O' Call Village, San Pedro.
