Helen Mize Hogan

May 30, 1932 — June 22, 2016

Helen June (Mize) Hogan passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 after a long illness. She was surrounded by her family. She was born on May 31, 1932 to Jesse and Maude Mize in Memphis, TN. She attended South Side High School and after graduation began to work at the First National Bank. There, through mutual friends, she met James Hogan whom she later married. Jim and Helen had one daughter, Beth. They lived in Memphis for most of their lives. After Beth started school, Helen volunteered with the newly formed Ladies of St Jude. From that affiliation she got a job at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as an executive assistant to the Department chair of Virology. This job became her lifelong passion, outside of the love of her family. Helen loved singing, dancing and beautiful flowers she grew in her garden. She was always the "life of the party." She was an active member of Germantown Presbyterian Church. Later in life, Helen and Jim moved to California to be closer to Beth and her family. But she always remained a southern girl at heart. She is preceded in death by James Hogan. She is survived by her daughter, Beth, her son in law, Mark Saroyan and 2 grandchildren, Jake and Melissa. She is also survived by her brother Edward "Buddy," Mize, his wife Martha and 2 nieces, Laura and Suzanne.
A memorial service in her honor will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA on Friday, July 1 at 2 pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her name to St Jude's in Memphis.
