Helen E. Fafoutis

February 23, 1931 — October 23, 2016

Helen Eleni Fafoutis, 85, died peacefully at home on 10-23-16, after a long illness. Helen was born in Chania, Greece on 2-23-31 and emigrated to San Pedro in 1957. She was very proud of her Greek heritage and loved to explain to her family and friends that the root of all words were Greek. She shared wonderful stories of what it was like to grow up in Greece with her family. When she came to the United States, she spoke only Greek and subsequently learned to speak English by watching soap operas. However, Helen also loved being an American, she would always say that the United States was the best country in the world. One of the many things Helen loved about living in California, was our beautiful coastline. She would often request to take frequent drives to just look at the ocean, it reminded her so much of her home in Greece. Helen also loved children, so much so, that she decided to become a pre-school teacher at Wee-Tot preschool. She worked there for several years and this brought her great fulfillment and joy. Helen was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and adored her family above all. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Alexandros Fafoutis, and her brother, Vangelis Manousakis. She is survived by: Niki (Steve) Cesareo, Mike (Angie) Fafoutis, Georgia (Frank) Mattera, and Nick (Cassie) Fafoutis. Grandchildren: Alyssa (Geoff) Hewitt, Alex Fafoutis, Christopher Fafoutis, Nicky Fafoutis, Emily Mattera and Eleni Fafoutis, and great grandchild Jacob Hunter. She is also survived by her sister, Efi Simou of Greece, brother George Manousakis, and numerous nieces and nephews in Athens, Greece. Helen was cared for with much love by her wonderful companion Yolanda Jovel. Yolanda loved her as if she was her own mother, caring for her for several years. Her nighttime caregiver Luna Tuscano was by her bedside when she passed. Helen loved her family first and foremost and had no greater joy than being with her children and grandchildren. She leaves a great void with her passing and will be missed very much by her family. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation in her memory to a children's charity of your choice. Funeral Services will be held at Green Hills Mortuary on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 12:00pm.
