Haruto Okihara passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 91 on October 3, 2014 in Gardena, California. Haruto was courageous during his battle with esophageal cancer. His pure determination gave him the strength to handle the treatment of chemo and radiation which extended his quality of life for two more years. Haruto was born in 1923 in Kohala, Hawaii. Haruto is survived by his three siblings, Kazuto Okihara, Joan Oyama (Kenneth) and Ralph Okihara, daughter Debbie Okihara, grandson Brandon Torimaru, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Nancy Yamada, brothers Toshio, Yasuichi and Rogers Okihara. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Green Hills Memorial Chapel (27501 S. Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA at 10 am). Burial to follow. Family and friends are welcome at the service, burial and memorial reception. Reception will be at the JCI (Japanese Cultural Institute) in Gardena immediately at 1 pm. Aloha or casual attire requested.
