Hans Curtis Scherf, 56, died too soon, July 16, 2023 at home with his wife beside him. Hans, son of James C. Scherf and Starr Hinrichs, was born November 18, 1966 at Chanute AFB, Rantoul, Illinois. A graduate of Roosevelt High School (Des Moines, IA), Hans attended GrandView University (Des Moines), where he played baseball while earning a B A degree in Political Science. Following an internship in Washington, D C and graduation, he joined the staff of Iowa Representative Tom Tauke in his U.S. Senate campaign. Hans served as Representative Tauke’s assistant, handling travel and scheduling arrangements, among many tasks. When his time in politics was complete, Hans followed a family legacy of service in the United States Air Force. After completing basic training in San Antonio, TX, Hans became a Senior Avionics Technician.
Honorably discharged after 6-years, Hans transferred his skills to Hughes Electronics. Upon the division’s purchase by Boeing Satellite Systems, Hans’ work continued with Boeing for the past 23-years. Hans married Jeanne Lesher in 2002, making their home in San Pedro, CA. They were a devoted couple, and partners in every sense of the word. Hans enjoyed gourmet cooking, a shared love of sports (especially Dodgers baseball), meeting new people, and their beloved pets Eddy and Franny, elderly rescue chihuahuas, and Micky, Curby, and Katie, their much loved cats. Hans’ love for the outdoors began early, as he took advantage of the Midwest’s hunting and fishing opportunities as a teenager and young adult. Hans’ passion for the outdoors and exploration followed him to the Pacific Coast, where he enjoyed what nature had to offer in that part of the country. Hans also enjoyed exploring all different environments throughout his life, whether it was the Mojave Desert of the Texas plains of his childhood. When Hans’ health began to fail, the words “in sickness and in health . . . . “ . " became a reality and he received unwavering support from Jeanne. Hans is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Lesher), parents James Scherf and Starr Hinrichs, brothers Christian Scherf (Lori Landers), Kurt Scherf (Dayna Wells), Jon Scherf; Aunt Lou Paap (Jay), Uncle Fritz Eickemeyer (Prayong); ten nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the excellent team of doctors and nurses at UCLA medical Center and Torrance Memorial Medical Center for Hans’ outstanding care. Hans will be remembered for his strength in the face of adversity, loving kindness, optimism, enthusiasm, work ethic, and love of all things baseball.
