H. Michael Weitzman O.D.

H. Michael Weitzman, age 82, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2011 after a heroic battle with cancer. He was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Case Western Reserve in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree and then was accepted to The Officers Candidate School, Class #1 in Newport, RI, serving 3 years in the U.S. Navy as a line officer in the Korean War. After completing his military obligation, he returned to Ohio State University School of Optometry. Upon graduation in 1957, he moved to California and met Phyllis who coincidently was also from Cleveland. They married in 1959 and moved to San Pedro where Dr. Mike opened up his optometric practice in South Shores. Dr. Weitzman was a member of the American Optometric Association, the California Optometric Association and the South Bay Society where he served as president and he brought distinction to himself for 20 years as a member of the Regional Professional Committee for Vision Service Plan where he received the VSP Award for many years of dedicated service. He recently retired (due to illness) as optometrist on the San Pedro Eye Care staff. He had also been a member of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce for the past 40 years and active on various committees. He had also been a member of the San Pedro Lions for over 40 years. He served as president in 1978 and served as district sight conservation chairman, Lions Mobile Screening Unit chairman and trustee of the Low Vision Project and received the Southern California Eye Institute Annual Award for dedicated service and the 1980 Volunteer Award from the Health Fair Expo. In 1982, he received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Los Angeles Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He also received the Humanitarian Award from Toberman Neighborhood Center where he served as chairman of the annual drive for numerous years. Recently, in January of 2011, he and Phyllis received the Ante Perkov Humanitarian Award from the San Pedro Lions. Michael is survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis; 3 children, Gregg, Debra and Daniel; and 7 grandchildren, Mikayla, Lea, Talia, Danielle, Lindsey, Max and Matilda. Memorial service will be held on Friday, April 20, 2011 at 12 noon at Temple Beth El, 1430 W. 7th St., San Pedro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Toberman Neighbor Center, 131 N. Grand Ave., San Pedro CA 90731.
