Grace Kwang Ok Ryu, died July 2nd, 2021 peacefully at her home in Rancho Palos Verdes, at the age of 85. Her funeral will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park on Tuesday, July 20. Due to the pandemic, the services will be held for family only.
Mrs. Ryu was born on May 20, 1936 in Pyong Yang Korea. She graduated from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea in 1959 with a BS in Nursing. Shortly after graduation she married Dr. Jung Shig Ryu. Together they had 2 sons and a daughter. While in South Korea, she worked as a Nurse in the Medicine Department until 1968 and then as a teacher at Sung-Shin Girls High School until the family emigrated to the United States of America in the summer of 1973. The family lived in Eugene, Oregon until 1977 when they moved to Oxford, Ohio. Then in 1983 the family moved and settled in Southern California. During her time in the US, Mrs. Ryu worked as a Nurse, Electrical Technician and helped her husband establish the South Bay Korean Business Directory, the Korean Community Newspaper and KoreAm Journal. In her spare time, she was active in the Yonsei University Alumni Association and her church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and doing solos. She also loved to travel and was blessed to have visited Mexico, Canada, Hong Kong & South Korea as well as extensively within the U.S. She retired in 2006 to take care of her husband full time until he passed away June 1, 2010. Due to her declining health, she lived with her daughter in Rancho Palos Verdes for the past 4 1/2 years until she passed on July 2nd.
She is survived by her Daughter- MeYoung Naret, Son-in-Law Paul Naret, Granddaughters- Mia & Korel and Son- James Ryu, Daughter-in-Law Tammy Ryu, Grandchildren- Nicholas, Audrey & Michael. As well as Grandsons- Timothy & Christian Ryu.
