Glenn Marlin Taylor

December 9, 1931 — June 19, 2024

Glenn Marlin Taylor, 92, passed away on the 19th of June 2024.
He was born to Chester Marvin Taylor and Arrie E. Taylor in Houston, Texas on December 9, 1932. At that time, the family's property in East Texas had a community grocery store and gas station which was tended by his by his mother, Arrie and later, his sister, Eunice. As Glenn got older, he would join his father in Alaska to work in his commercial fishing business for periods of time. But Glenn would always return to Texas for the school year. After graduation from high school, he rejoined his father full-time in the commercial fishing business. He spent several years in Alaska not only fishing but hunting deer and bear. Eventually, Glenn purchased his own commercial fishing vessel. After years of commercial fishing, he was ready for a change so he sold his boat and joined the US Army. Ironically, they sent him to Texas for boot camp, then after graduation, the Army sent him back to Alaska. After his tour of duty, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant and he returned to East Texas.
Glenn wanted to continue his education so upon his return, he attended Sam Houston State College, graduating and earning his teaching credential. During this time, he was part of a very talented and highly regarded Bluegrass and Country band. Glenn played the guitar, the mandolin and sang lead vocal. The band members discussed going professional but Glenn wanted to teach, so playing music professionally did not happen. All of us who heard him sing and play were truly blessed.
After teaching for a few years in Texas, Glenn moved to California in 1966 to be closer to family and began teaching for the Torrance Unified School District. He truly loved teaching and while continuing his education, earning a Masters Degree in the subject, he met his future wife, Jaroslava "Jan" Seda, who was also a teacher.
Glenn and Jan were married on April 9, 1974 and made their home in Lomita, California. Although loving to teach, Glenn never lost his love for the outdoors and hunting. He began to teach his nephew, David Cooper, everything he knew about hunting and fishing. When David was about 12 years old, Glenn took him hunting for deer. David would spend the rest of his life hunting with Glenn whenever and wherever possible until, due to Glenn's age, he had to stop. Glenn was an excellent hunter - something that was handed down from Jackson Taylor (grandfather) to Chester Marvin Taylor (father) to each of his children: Chester Marvin, Glenn Marlin, Eunice Ly Ann and George Edward. The outdoors, hunting and fishing was in their blood. They have all passed now and world is a sadder place for it.
Also passed down through the family was a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to "tell the story." Glenn always had a good story to tell. As humorous, delightful and generous as he was, there was also a serious side. He loved his family, his country and God.
Glenn was deeply admired and loved by his family, his friends and his students. He will always be missed but never forgotten.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jan Taylor, and loving family members.
