Memorial service for Gisela Saturday, August 4, 2012 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church 2900 W. Carson, Torrance, Ca. 90503
Gisela Margarete Schroeder was born in Stettin, Germany on December 17, 1925. She was the oldest of six children. The family home was is Stettin which lies on the Oder River in Pomerania. In 1945, Stettin was bombed and burned. Gisela's family evacuated to Teterow, Mecklenburg.
Gisela met her husband, Hans Heinrich Schroeder, in 1948 and they were married February 4, 1949. They continued to live in Guestrow, Mecklenburg until 1957. At that time, East Germany was under communist rule, so to make a better life for their family, the Schroeders escaped to live in refugee camps in West Germany. In December of 1957, they moved to a camp in Weinzberg/Heilbronn.
While living in the refugee camps, Gisela and Hans waited for their visas. In 1959, they immigrated to the United States on a ship called "The Hanseatic." It arrived in New York on June 17th. Then they rode the Southern Pacific Railroad to their final destination – Los Angeles!
This was quite an adventure for a young mother with two young children, Gundula and Hans! Gisela did not speak a word of English and had left everyone and everything she knew back in Germany. The Schroeders moved to Torrance and then, three years later, to their permanent residence in Carson where Gisela lived for the next 50 years.
Gisela worked at the Lido Knitting Mills. A brain tumor was discovered that affected her balance and, after 28 years of service, she retired. For the next 12 years, Gisela and Hans enjoyed their retirement and took many trips back home to Germany to visit their families.
Gisela is survived by her children Gundula (Gary) Temes and Hans Eckhard (Pam) Schroeder, grandchildren Kristi (Gabriel) , Jeffrey Jessica, Robbie Holly, Nicole and Hans Nicholas and great grandchildren Madelyne, Ashton and Zane. Her sisters Erika, Brigitte (Horst) and Ursula (Dieter) brother, Guenter and many nieces and nephews currently live in Germany. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Hans Heinrich, Parents Erich & Elisabeth Hinz and her brother, Manfred.
