Gertrud A. Jacoby born 29 April 1934 in Germany, passed away 23 October 2022, a year to the day of her late husband William R. Jacoby’s passing, at the age of 88. She met Dad at the Phoenix Club while out with a friend of hers. Mom and Dad were married 56 years up to the time of his passing.
Gertrud was sponsored by a friend’s family from Germany and immigrated to the United States in the late 1950’s. Her first experience in America was in Wisconsin, where she was employed as a nanny to a family with three young boys. She subsequently moved and found employment in Illinois with the Hoover family of Hoover Vacuum and was a housekeeper / nanny to their children for several years. She made her way to California, attended the International Tabulating Institute in Los Angeles, and having passed the prescribed examinations, earned her certification for I.B.M. Key Punch Operation. She was hired and worked as a key punch operator for the Richfield Oil Corporation in downtown Los Angeles.
She worked hard at and earned her U.S. Citizenship and was so proud of that achievement. It meant many nights of studying and Dad driving and dropping her off for the night classes to achieve it. She took pride in caring for the family home, enjoyed reading biographies, her German magazines, cooking and baking. She had many wonderful German recipes that were enjoyed by family and friends and will surely be missed.
Those that knew her can attest to the fact that she had strong and stubborn opinions and could, at times, be a force to be reckoned with, yet, she could also be a lot of fun. Trips made up to the local mountains for several Mother / Daughter weekend getaways bring fond memories of fun times together. She was an avid Elvis fan! Day trips to Solvang where not uncommon over the years and one memorable trip, by her request, was to ‘put the petal to the metal’ to get home in time for an Elvis special she had to see that night – we made it with minutes to spare!
Gertrud is survived by her daughter Martina MacDonald, son Brian Jacoby and Daughter-In-Law Katherine Jacoby. She is also survived by her grandchildren Riley and Parker Jacoby, Nathan Woodworth, her sister in Germany Helga Kissler and nephew Dr. Alexander Kissler.
Services will be held at the interment site on Friday, November 11, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, Section Summit Lawn, Lot 623, Grave A.
