George T Byer, age 91, entered the gates of Heaven on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. He left peacefully from his home, surrounded by family.
Born in Wewoka, Oklahoma on February 2, 1926, George was the first-born twin to Gerald and Betty (Bennight) Byer. George became a pilot in the US Navy Air Corps at the end of WWII. He went on to graduate from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was a brilliant engineer known for his involvement in military guidance systems, the Patriot Missile and a chief engineer of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit System (MARTA). He was a devoted husband and father, gifted artist, sailor, pilot and fly fisherman. He served as a Prison Chaplain and with the Gideon’s. He would tell you his greatest accomplishment was leading loved ones, prisoners and the willing to Christ.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Betty (McDonnell) Byer of San Pedro, daughters Betty (Richard) DeLong, Jeannine (Mark) Stadler; his grandchildren, Teal (Stephanie) DeLong, Tara (Jason) Hobson, Adam (Katie) Stadler, Matthew (Katie) Stadler, Katharine (Daniel) Knoodle, and Laura (Kevin) Koronczok; and eleven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his twin brother, Jerry Byer, his wife Martha Louise (Singletary) Byer and Geraldine (Bradley) Byer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 at two o’clock at Green Hills Memorial Chapel, 27501 S. Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275. Burial will follow for George and Martha Byer at Green Hills Memorial Park. Family will greet friends at the Chapel at two o’clock.
