A longtime resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, Fred Nels Holmquist, Jr. was born November 4, 1922 in Phoenix, AZ, and died at home in Dallas on March 3, 2011. He is survived by daughter, Margaret Katherine Holmquist of Dallas; son, Frank John Holmquist of NM; twin sister, Helen Holmquist Halnan of Phoenix, AZ; brother, James Bruce Holmquist of Woodland, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife, Kitty Claire Chalk Holmquist; son, Fred Holmquist III; older brother, Lars Holmquist and his wife, Sidney; and parents, Fritz and Louise Holmquist. Fred grew up in Phoenix and attended Kenilworth Elementary School and Phoenix Union H.S. He was proud of his Arizona heritage and Scottish roots. Fred attended Phoenix Jr. College, the University of Arizona, and University of Washington (BS 1944). He served in WWII as a lieutenant junior guard, was gunnery and damage control officer on LSM 207 in the invasion of Iwo Jima, and watched the flag go up on Mt. Suribachi. He earned a MS degree at University of California in 1947. As a naval reserve officer, he earned the diploma d'Etudes Superieures, Geophysics at the University of Paris. In 1959 Fred was awarded the Ph.D. in physics at the University of California Berkeley. He had a long career in physics at Livermore Labs, SW Center for Advanced Studies, GE Tempo and TRW where he contributed to the Strategic Defense Initiative. A Requiem Eucharist was held in Dallas on March 8, 2011. Interment will be at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, March 11, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Sarah Phelphs officiating.
